The Hare's Ear gets its name from the multi-colored tiny hairs that make up body and thorax of this fly-they come from the hair of the hare and generally from the short fibers found on the ear or "mask." Rubber legs add additional movement under water. This fly is one of the most popular nymphs in fly fishing and is found successful in any water. Smaller sizes mimic the nymphal stage of the Blue-Winged Olive as its predecesor in the insect's life-cycle. Larger sizes can mimic other mayflies. Before these insects hatch as adults, they will be swimming in the nymphal stage and can be imitated with this fly. Drift this fly into feeding columns in a dead drift with the current and feel free to give it the gentlest of twitches or allow to swing at the end of a drift. This fly is also effective tied about 18 inches behind a streamer in moving or still water.
