The pheasant tail nymph is one of the most versatile and effective nymph patterns on both still and moving water. This pattern mimics a mayfly nymph and is especially effective in smaller sizes to imitate the nymph of the blue winged olive mayfly. The addition of the gold bead adds weight to the fly to get it deeper in the water column during the beginning of the drift. By adding rubber legs, we've stepped this fly up another notch by giving it more movement as it drifts by hungry fish. With a peacock hurl thorax, the pheasant tail nymph carries all of the attractive characteristics that make this an angler's favorite fly throughout the year. Fish this pattern either with an indicator or a high-stick dead drift. The pheasant tail is often used in 2- or 3-fly nymph rigs with great success.
